The Thrift Store Dandys
Christopher Andrew Cooke writes, arranges and plays all the instruments in the studio recordings. For live performances a rhythm section is added making the band a powerful trio.
Chris got his start as a musician playing in several bands, first as a bassist, then guitarist-singer/song writer, which took him to Florida, Chapel Hill and eventually NYC. He then decided to move to Tokyo.
While living in Tokyo (for over 25 years), he immersed himself in the art & music scene where he discover dandyism, that became his lifestyle. He slowly re-incorporated his musical background by making music for short films & then acoustic performances.
As covid started to lock down Japan, Christopher decided to return to the states. First in LA, where he worked on instrumental projects, then returned to NY and started to develop ‘The Thrift Store Dandys’ sound. Focusing on textured, distorted guitars sounds, using Gretsch guitars. Specifically, older, discontinued Electromatic models, made in Korea, while keeping the Dandy aesthetics.
The Thrift Store Dandys
The Thrift Store Dandys sound is defined by a dense, atmospheric sound that prioritizes emotional resonance over polished perfection. The result is a sound that feels both retro and modern.
The core of their sound is built on the texture of the guitars— Gretsch hollow-bodies—that provide a rich, harmonic foundation. This distortion is specifically described as "melodic," meaning it adds warmth and character rather than harsh noise.
Their recordings place a heavy emphasis on storytelling and "poignant lyrics" that are meant to be felt as much as heard.
Their tracks are anchored by a consistent, forward-moving rhythm that guides the layered and atmospheric guitar work.
Led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Christopher Andrew Cooke; while living in New York & Tokyo, he has created a truely unique musical journey.
